Shelter
Song Meaning
Pat Barrett keeps the whole song small: three verses that each land on the same admission, “just need you,” and a chorus that asks for nothing more elaborate than “shelter.” The first verse has him running “to the light, just to be with you” while trouble presses in from every side, and the second gives up on explanations: “I don't need all the answers.”
The chorus gives shelter an address, “Safe here in your loving arms.” By the third verse the uncertainty has moved to the future (“Whatever tomorrow brings”), and the one fixed point is what he knows about God, not what he knows about the outcome. The bridge finishes the thought with a physical image, “The weight of the world's falling off of my shoulders,” trading what he carries for what God holds.
The picture sits close to Psalm 91:1, where the one who dwells in the shelter of the Most High rests in the shadow of the Almighty, and to Psalm 46:1, which calls God a refuge and ever-present help in trouble. The plain, repeated phrasing suits a prayer meant to be sung together in a hard week.
I know right where I'm turning
When trouble's on every side
And listen, I keep on running
To the light, just to be with you
[Verse 2]
I may never know every reason
Why things are the way they are
But I don't need all the answers
To find, just need you
[Chorus]
Shelter, I need your shelter
I need your shelter
Hide me away from the heart
Away from it all
Safe here in your loving arms
I need your shelter
[Verse 3]
Whatever the future's holding
Whatever tomorrow brings
Oh, one thing I know is certain
And I, just need you
[Chorus]
Shelter, I need your shelter
I need your shelter
Hide me away from the heart
Away from it all
Safe here in your loving arms
I need your shelter
[Bridge]
The weight of the world's falling off of my shoulders
I'm letting go 'cause I know that you hold it
You care for me more than I've ever known it
And I just need you
[Chorus]
Shelter, I need your shelter
I need your shelter
Hide me away from the heart
Away from it all
Safe here in your loving arms
I need your shelter
