There is a treasure that’s hidden
It waits to be found in the field
Seek and you shall find it
Seek it wholeheartedly
Oh it is the Kingdom of Heaven
The glory of Jesus revealed
Seek and you shall find it
(When you) Seek it wholeheartedly
So I ran to the Man and I asked Him the cost
He said that all that it takes is all that you’ve got
(So we sing it out)
Take it all
The cost is a joy to me
(Yeah, yeah)
(What a joy, what a joy)
Oh there is a treasure that’s hidden
It waits to be found in the field
Seek and you shall find it
(When you) Seek it wholeheartedly
Oh this is the Kingdom of Heaven
The glory of Jesus it’s finally revealed
Seek and you shall find it
Oh seek it wholeheartedly
So I ran to the Man and I asked Him the cost
He said all that it takes is all that you’ve got
(Come on sing)
Take it all
Take it all (Yeah)
The cost is a joy to me
(Take it) Take it all
Take it all
Take it all (Lord)
The cost is a joy to me
Consider it all joy
Whatever I’ve gained I count it all lost
The cost is a joy to me (Yes)
It’s not just a portion take all that I’ve got
The cost is a joy to me
And if I just have Jesus, I’ve got it all
The cost is a joy to me
For the joy set before Him He took the cross
Oh the cost is a joy to me
(Sing it out)
Whatever I’ve gained I count it all lost
The cost is a joy to me
Oh it’s not just a portion take all that I’ve got
The cost is a joy to me
And if I just have Jesus, well I’ve got it all
The cost is a joy to me (Yeah)
For the joy set before Him He took the cross
Oh the cost is a joy to me
(Would you say whatever I’ve gained)
Whatever I’ve gained I count it all lost
The cost is a joy to me
It’s not just a portion take all that I’ve got
The cost is a joy to me
And if I just have Jesus, I’ve got it all
The cost is a joy to me
For the joy set before Him He took the cross
Oh the cost is a joy
The cost is a joy
Oh the cost is a joy to me
The cost is a joy
Oh the cost is a joy to me
(Sing it out)
Whatever I’ve gained I count it all lost
The cost is a joy to me
It’s not just a portion take all that I’ve got
The cost is a joy to me
And if I just have Jesus, I’ve got it all
The cost is a joy to me
For the joy set before Him He took the cross
Oh the cost is a joy
It’s such a joy
What a joy, what a joy, what a joy it is
What a joy, what a joy it is
To give all I have
And gain the Kingdom of Heaven
So take it all
Take it all (Yes Lord)
Take it all
The cost is a joy to me
Take it all
The cost is a joy to me
(Yes Lord)

Song Meaning
The song builds its central image from Jesus' parable of the hidden treasure in the field, framing the Kingdom of Heaven as something worth selling everything to possess. A repeated invitation to "seek it wholeheartedly" gives way to a personal encounter: the singer runs to "the Man" and asks what discipleship costs, and the answer comes back that it takes everything you have. Rather than counting that as loss, the chorus turns the demand into delight — "the cost is a joy to me" — and the bridge echoes Paul's language of counting former gains as rubbish so that Christ might be everything. The most striking turn comes near the end, when the singer looks at the cross itself and notes that Jesus endured it "for the joy set before Him," making His own sacrifice the pattern for ours. The live setting is audible in the repeated calls to sing it out and the layered "take it all" responses, which give the surrender a congregational, cumulative feel rather than a private one. The song never treats renunciation as grim duty; it insists that gaining the Kingdom and having Jesus is itself the reward, so the giving away and the getting are the same act.
