First Love / Obsession

Shane & Shane's "First Love / Obsession" borrows the language of romance deliberately, addressed to God rather than a person: "I'm returning to the secret place, just an altar and a flame... I hear Your voice, I see Your face." The intimacy isn't accidental — worship songs have long used the vocabulary of romantic devotion to describe something the English language doesn't have better words for.

"There's a table just for You and me, break the bread and pour the wine" leans specifically on communion imagery, turning what could read as purely romantic into something explicitly Eucharistic — the shared meal that's always been central to how Christians describe closeness with Christ. "Perfect union, nothing in between, I am Yours and You are mine" echoes the language the Song of Solomon itself uses for covenant love.

"You're still my first love, You're still my only one" is close to God's own complaint to the church in Revelation — that they had left their first love — turned here into a confession of return rather than departure. "I feel my heart beating out of my chest... may the flame of my heart always be lit" keeps the song's intensity from cooling into routine, worship treated as something closer to falling in love than checking a box.
