God So Loved

An invitation drives the song from its first line: "Come all you weary, come all you thirsty." Water and table images fill the opening verses, with a well "that never runs dry" for the thirsty and a table where mercy satisfies the sinner. Shane & Shane keep the language plain and welcoming, so the song sounds like someone holding a door open rather than issuing a lecture.

The chorus then restates John 3:16 almost word for word, "For God so loved the world that He gave us His one and only Son to save us," and stretches the last promise, "will live forever," into a wordless sung refrain. A later verse gets specific about what people carry: "bring all your failures, bring your addictions," and lay them "at the foot of the cross," where "Jesus is waiting there with open arms." Added lines announce that "the power of hell" is defeated and the singer is "walking in freedom."

Midway, the song pauses on a doxology, "Praise God, praise God, from whom all blessings flow," before returning to the chorus and the open arms of the cross. Isaiah 55:1, John 4:14, and Matthew 11:28 sit behind the thirst-and-rest imagery.
