I Delight In You (Psalm 1)

Psalm 1 is the skeleton, set to melody. The first verse pictures the Lord as “a stream of purest water” with blessing growing “by Your side,” and promises to abide in His Word from sunrise until the day is done. The chorus reduces it to one sentence repeated: “I delight in You… Like water, You satisfy my soul.”

The second verse takes the psalm’s contrast and keeps it plain. Advice from the wicked is refused, the ancient path stays lit, “chaff will blow away / And all the flowers fade / But only You and Your Word will last.” Then the writer turns honest about himself, “my heart is prone to wander,” “my feet have gone astray,” and answers that failure with the cross, where “every sin was nailed.” That is what finally frees the singing: “Now I will sing.”

The water image carries the psalm’s picture of a life rooted beside a stream, and the song spends its time on what the singer wants rather than on the fate of the wicked. The final chorus loops longer than the others, a quiet way of saying that delight in the Lord does not run out.
