Knowing You

A reckoning of loss and gain begins the song. "All I once held dear, built my life upon, all this world reveres and wars to own" is placed on one side, and "all I once thought gain I have counted loss, spent and worthless now compared to this." Shane & Shane keep the verse as a single inventory and let the refrain name what outweighs it: "Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You, there is no greater thing."

The refrain then lists what that knowledge amounts to. "You're my all, You're the best, You're my joy, my righteousness, and I love You Lord." The second verse turns desire into a goal, "to be found in You and known as Yours," and praises righteousness as a gift, "to possess by faith what I could not earn," called "all surpassing gift."

The third verse reaches toward the cost and power of faith. "Oh to know the power of Your risen life, and to know You in Your sufferings, to become like You in Your death," ending with "so with You to live and never die." Philippians 3:8 supplies the counting of everything as loss, Philippians 3:9 the righteousness that comes through faith, and Philippians 3:10 the knowing of Christ, His resurrection power and His sufferings.
