Shane & Shane set Colossians 1:15-20 to music almost verbatim, and the hymn's structure follows Paul's own logic closely — starting with Christ's supremacy over creation before moving to his humanity and finally his glory, the same order the original passage builds in. 'The firstborn over all creation... all visible and invisible things bow before Christ our King' lifts Colossians 1:15's description of Christ as 'the firstborn of all creation' directly.

'The Godhead dwelling fully in Him' echoes Colossians 2:9's claim that 'all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily' in Christ — a dense theological statement kept intact rather than simplified for singability. The repeated refrain, 'nothing left to say but holy,' names the song's own limits honestly: after working through Christ's role in creation, incarnation, and redemption, the hymn doesn't reach for a bigger claim to close on, it just repeats the one word left once the theology has been stated as fully as it can be.
