O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
Song Meaning
Shane & Shane's "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" carries Charles Wesley's 1739 hymn almost word for word, a text written to celebrate Wesley's own conversion and still doing the same job nearly three centuries later. The opening line admits the song's own limits before it even starts — a thousand tongues still wouldn't be enough to properly sing this praise, so one voice will have to try anyway.
"Jesus the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease" leans on the same idea Isaiah's prophecy of good news to the brokenhearted carries — liberty proclaimed to captives, not just comfort offered to people already free. "He breaks the pow'r of cancelled sin, He sets the prisoner free" makes that liberation explicit, sin pictured as a debt already cancelled rather than one still being paid down.
The hymn's closing image widens out from personal rescue to something cosmic: "by saints below and saints above, the Church in earth and heaven" all singing the same praise at once. Shane & Shane's arrangement doesn't need to add anything to make that scale land — the words were already built for a whole congregation to shout, not just one person to hum.
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of His grace
My gracious Master and my God
Assist me to proclaim
To spread thro' all the earth abroad
The honors of Thy name
So come on and sing out
Let our anthem grow loud
There is one great love
Jesus
Jesus the name that charms our fears
That bids our sorrows cease
'Tis music in the sinner's ears
'Tis life and health and peace
He breaks the pow'r of cancelled sin
He sets the prisoner free
His blood can make the foulest clean
His blood availed for me
So come on and sing out
Let our anthem grow loud
There is one great love
Come on and sing out
Let our anthem grow loud
There is one great love
Jesus
Jesus
He speaks and listening to His voice
New life the dead receive
The mournful broken hearts receive
The humble poor believe
Glory to God and praise and love
Be ever ever giv'n
By saints below and saints above
The Church in earth and heaven
So come on and sing out
Let our anthem grow loud
There is one great love
So come on and sing out
Let our anthem grow loud
There is one great love
There is one great love
Jesus
O Jesus
O Jesus
O Jesus
