Reign Above It All

Shane & Shane open with a straightforward contrast — "the reign of darkness now has ended, in the kingdom of light" — that echoes Colossians 1:13's claim that God "delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the Kingdom of the Son of his love." The song treats that transfer as already finished, not something still pending.

The recurring image, "you sent the darkness running out of an empty grave," ties the song's whole argument to one specific historical claim rather than an abstract mood — the resurrection itself, the empty tomb the gospel accounts describe in passages like Luke 24:6's "he isn't here, but is risen." "Now seated alone in glory, enthroned on the highest praise" moves the song's final image from the grave to the throne, following the same trajectory the New Testament's own resurrection accounts do.
