The Blessing

Scripture itself forms the first section. The priestly benediction of Numbers 6 is sung straight, "The Lord bless you and keep you / make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you," and cycles three times before settling into "Amen, amen, amen." The repetition lets the words function as a spoken blessing in a room, not a narrative.

The lyric then expands the benediction in the singer's own voice. "May His favor be upon you / and a thousand generations" reaches past the listener to "your family and your children / and their children, and their children," echoing the language of Deuteronomy 7:9 about God's faithfulness across generations.

The last movement turns from wish to assurance. "May His presence go before you / and behind you and beside you / all around you and within you" builds into "He is with you," then lists the times when that nearness matters: "in the morning, in the evening," "in your coming and your going," "in your weeping and rejoicing." It resolves on "He is for you," which lines up with Romans 8:31, while Psalm 139:5 supplies the sense of being hemmed in behind and before. A closing "Our God is for you" ends with a quiet "Amen."
