Wounded

Why wound a heart and then leave it broken? The question drives "Wounded," and the singer puts it straight to God: "Why since you've wounded my heart, don't You heal it?" The heart he describes has been "stolen" and "left here broken," a heart of stone.

The second stanza asks God to carry that stolen heart away instead of leaving it behind, and the request turns into a prayer for change: "Awaken the dawning of a new heart, where stone begins to bleed." The "arrow of God that runs through me" leaves him in need rather than comforted. A lone "Awaken" gives way to a repeated "How long? How long? How long?" and the song ends without resolving it.

Psalm 13's opening cry, and the promise in Ezekiel 36 of a heart of stone exchanged for a heart of flesh, sit close to its questions. The lyric stays in the ache and keeps addressing God directly, which suits seasons of doubt or waiting.
