You Said
Song Meaning
Shane & Shane's “You Said” is a prayer song built on promises of God, each introduced by the words “You said.” It is short, and every line takes a verse of scripture and turns it back to him as a request.
The first promise is that if we ask, we will receive whatever we need. The second is the call to pray, with the answer that God will hear from heaven and heal the land. The song then looks outward, repeating that God's glory will fill the earth like water covers the sea. The next line speaks of lifting our eyes to see that the harvest is here and the kingdom is near, and the following one recalls the invitation to ask and he will give the nations. The final lines turn personal, with the singer calling that “the cry of my heart” and looking to distant shores and islands that will see. The pattern gives the song a confident tone, because the singer is not guessing at what God might do but reminding him of what he has said. It suits a prayer meeting, a missions night or a service that wants to pray for a city or country. The simple structure makes it easy for a group to sing and to add their own “you said” lines from the Bible.
Asking and receiving is in Matthew 7:7. Praying for the healing of the land is 2 Chronicles 7:14, and the nations given as an inheritance are in Psalm 2:8.
You said, "pray and I'll hear from heaven
And I'll heal your land"
You said Your glory will fill the earth
Like water the sea
You said, "lift up your eyes
The harvest is here, the kingdom is near"
You said, "ask and I'll give the nations to you"
Oh Lord, that's the cry of my heart
Distant shores and the islands will see
