Song Meaning

Shilo Ben Hod's “Praises Of Israel - Hu Asher” sets Romans 8 in English and Hebrew. The verse opens with “He who did not spare His own Son but delivered Him over for us all,” and asks, “how will He not also with Him freely give us all things.” The Hebrew title, Hu Asher, means “He who,” the first words of the passage in that language.

The verse continues with the questions Paul asks in the same chapter: “If God is for us, who can be against us? Who will separate us from the love of Christ?” The chorus answers directly: “Neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come will be able to separate us from the love of God.” The same text is then sung in Hebrew. Singing it in both languages connects Paul's words to the language of the Scriptures he was drawing from.

The lyric is a close setting of Romans 8:31-39. God not sparing his Son is Romans 8:32, and the chorus is Romans 8:38-39.

Verse:

He who did not spare His own Son

But delivered Him over for us all

How will He not also with Him freely give us all things

If God is for us, who can be against us

Who will separate us from the love of Christ

Chorus:

Neither death, not life,

Nor angles, nor principalities

Nor things present, nor things to come

Will be able to separate us from the love of God

בית:

הוא אשר לא חשך את בנו שלו

אלא מסר אותו בעד כולנו

האם לא יעניק לנו את הכל איתו

אם אלוהים איתנו מי יעמוד נגדנו

מי יפרידנו מאהבת המשיח

פזמון:

לא המוות ולא החיים

לא מלאכים ולא שליטים

לא ההווה ולא העתיד

יפרידנו מאהבת אלוהים
