Sparrow (Under Heaven's Eyes)

An honest question about being seen opens "Sparrow (Under Heaven's Eyes)": "I heard Your eyes are on the faithful, You delight in all Your saints, but what of those of us who wander in the darkness and mistakes?" The verse sets up the doubt, which draws on Psalm 33:18, and the singer says, "I need to know You see me, with my face down on this floor... Have I escaped the scope of mercy?"

The chorus answers it with the sparrow image from Matthew 10:29: "You see the sparrow, You see me here, with the pain of my past and the depth of my fears. You see my future, one day I'll rise, my hope is secure under Heaven's eyes." The repeated phrase "under Heaven's eyes" is the thing the singer is trying to believe.

The second verse reaches for scripture directly. "I could never outrun Your presence, you see beginnings from their end, even the dark is light to You, Lord" paraphrases Psalm 139, especially 139:12. A whispered line follows, "take courage, dear heart, you can never fall that far," and the song finishes with a nod to the hymn: "I sing because I'm happy, and I sing because I'm free, Your eyes are on the sparrow."
