Jesus My Savior To Bethlehem Came

“Jesus My Savior To Bethlehem Came,” sung here by The Hymn Makers, is a four-verse hymn that follows Christ's life from birth to return. Each verse begins with the same words and ends with the same pattern: “Seeking for me, for me,” “Dying for me, for me,” “Calling for me, for me,” and finally “Coming for me, for me.” The repeated phrases change a general creed into a personal address.

The first verse stays at the manger, “laid in a manger to sorrow and shame,” and calls it “wonderful.” The second moves to Calvary, where he “paid the great debt, and my soul He set free,” and the writer wonders aloud, “how could it be?” The third looks back at the singer's own wandering “in darkness and cold” and the Savior who “gently and long did He plead with my soul.” The last verse is a promise: “O I shall see Him descend from the sky.”

The seeking Savior is Luke 19:10, where the Son of Man comes to seek and save the lost. The paid debt on Calvary is the redemption of Galatians 3:13, and the descent from the sky is the return in 1 Thessalonians 4:16.
