Angels We Have Heard On High

Song Meaning

Amy Grant's reading keeps this eighteenth-century French carol's structure fully intact — verse, Latin refrain, verse, refrain — without modernizing any of the language across all four verses. "Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing over the plains" stays a report of something witnessed, not an image needing explanation.

The refrain, "Gloria in excelsis Deo," repeats exactly as many times as the shepherds themselves are pictured singing it, carrying more weight in three Latin words than most of the English lines around it.

The final verse adds Mary and Joseph directly into the scene — "Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, with us sing our Savior's birth" — treating the carol's listeners as one more set of voices joining a chorus of angels and shepherds that started long before this particular recording. Grant's version doesn't add anything new to that inheritance; it just keeps it going one more time.

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing over the plains
And the mountains in reply,
Echoing their joyous strains.
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o

Shepherds, why this Jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o

Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ, the Lord,
The newborn King
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o

See Him in a manger laid
Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth!
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
With us sing our Savior's birth.
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o
Glo-ori-a
In excelsis de-o
