Isaiah's birth announcement supplies the first stanza almost line for line: a Child born, a Son given, the government resting on Him, and the four names Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and humble Prince of Peace. The second stanza dwells on the reach of that rule, with a peace that "shall never end," David's ancient throne, and a kingdom upheld "with justice and righteousness" by the zeal of the Lord.
Then the voice changes. The last stanza turns the prophecy into a petition: "Lord Jesus, come now and reign in me." Titles announced from a distance become personal requests, as the singer asks Him to be Counselor and God, a source of "wisdom and power," and to fill heart and mind with peace.
That movement from proclamation to prayer gives the piece its shape. Isaiah 9:6-7 is the text behind it, Luke 1:32-33 echoes the promise of David's throne, and Philippians 4:6-7 answers the closing plea for a mind filled with peace.
