Imagine
Song Meaning
Every line of "Imagine" starts from the same admission, "I can only imagine," and then asks a question it cannot answer. What will the heart feel when "surrounded by Your glory"? Will the singer dance for Jesus or stand still in awe, remain on both feet or fall to the knees, sing hallelujah or find it impossible to speak at all?
Later lines widen the view. Creation bowed down, the whole universe saying His name out loud, and "all our broken lives / Resurrected in the healing light" give the scene a scale beyond one person's reaction. A second pass through the refrain swaps glory for forgiveness, "Surrounded by forgiveness," so the moment before God is shaped as much by mercy as by majesty. The ending shrinks back to "just imagine," leaving the questions open.
Scripture lines up with that anticipation. Philippians 2:10-11 describes every knee bowing and every tongue confessing, Revelation 21:3-4 promises God dwelling with His people and wiping away every tear, and 1 Corinthians 13:12 speaks of seeing face to face after only dim sight now.
I can only imagine what it will be like
When I walk by Your side
I can only imagine what my eyes will see
When Your face is looking at me
Surrounded by Your glory, what will
My heart feel
Will I dance for You Jesus or in awe of You
Be still
Imagine, I can only imagine
I can only imagine all creation bowed down
The whole universe saying Your name out loud
I can only imagine all our broken lives
Resurrected in the healing light
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my
Heart feel
Will I dance for You Jesus or in awe of You
Be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees
Will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, Will I be able to
Speak at all
I can only imagine, I can only imagine
Surrounded by forgiveness, what will my
Heart feel
Will I dance for You Jesus or in awe of
You be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my
Knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine, Oh I can only imagine
I can only, I can only, I can only imagine
I can only imagine, just imagine
I can only imagine, imagine
