Song Meaning

Amy Grant's "Jesus Loves Me / They'll Know We Are Christians / Helping Hand" medley moves from a child's simplest hymn to a much harder question about what actually proves any of it is real. "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so" opens on bedrock-level assurance before the medley asks what that love is supposed to look like once it leaves the page.

"And they'll know that we are Christians by our love, by our love" answers directly, echoing Jesus' own words to His disciples — that love for one another is what would identify them, not a slogan or a symbol. The medley doesn't let that stay abstract for long: "I'm talking about the soul all alone, needing the daily bread, someplace to lay his head... the neighbor on your street, won't you look him in the eye."

"Everybody needs a helping hand, if that ain't what it's all about, tell me what, what can I do" turns the theology into a direct question aimed at the listener rather than a comfortable conclusion. By ending back on "they'll know we are Christians by our love," the medley makes its case in the plainest possible terms — belief that doesn't show up as care for an actual neighbor hasn't really landed yet.

Jesus loves me this I know
For the bible tells me so
Little ones to him belong
They are weak but he is strong

And they'll know that we are christians
By our love by our love
Yes they'll know that we are christians
By our love by our love

We've al seen trouble from time to time
There's a mountain ahead
I've got no strength to climb, hey
If you're feeling strong
Reach out to me
I hope this journey won't take long
But wont' you please have mercy

Cause everybody needs a helping hand
If that ain't what it's all about
Tell me what, what can I do
What can I do today

I'm talking about the soul all alone
Needing the daily bread
Someplace to lay his head, yeah
And I'm talking about the neighbor on your street
Won't you look him in the eye
Take time to speak that's mercy, yeah
And they'll know that we are christians by our love, by our love
They'll know we are christians by our love
They'll know we are christians, by our love
