Thy Word

Cedarmont Kids sing “Thy Word” in a gentle arrangement built around one of the best-known verses about scripture. The song begins with it directly: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” The melody is simple enough for children to learn quickly, and the words are taken from the older wording that many families know from memory.

The verses speak about the fear of being lost. “When I feel afraid, think I've lost my way, still You're there right beside me. Nothing will I fear as long as You are near.” The singer asks God to be near “to the end,” and promises not to forget his love, while admitting that his heart is “forever wandering.” That honest line gives the song more depth than a typical children's tune, because it acknowledges that even a child has to be brought back. The prayer then asks, “Jesus, be my guide, hold me to Your side, and I will love You to the end.” The closing line returns to the opening image of the light on the path. It works well for bedtime, children's classes, or any family that wants to pair scripture memory with music.

The lamp and the light are in Psalm 119:105. Fearing no evil because God is near is Psalm 23:4, and trusting him to direct our paths is Proverbs 3:5-6.
