I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day

Chris Renzema's "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" sets Longfellow's 1863 poem to music, written the same winter the poet's son came home from the Civil War badly wounded. "I thought of when the day would come when the belfries of all Christendom would roll along in unbroken song of peace on earth, good will to men" opens on hope, but the poem doesn't let that hope go untested.

"And in despair I bowed my head, 'there is no peace on earth,' I said, 'for hate is strong and it mocks the song'" is the turn that keeps this from being a simple carol — a direct admission that the words being sung didn't match what was actually happening in the world that year.

The answer isn't a change in circumstances; it's a claim about who's still in control regardless: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep, the wrong shall fail, the right prevail, with peace on earth, good will to men." It leans on the same confidence the psalmist has — that the One who watches over His people never slumbers or sleeps, hope held onto because of who God is, not because the evidence had changed yet.
