Old Friend

Chris Renzema builds "Old Friend" out of a string of unhurried images — a night drive with the windows down, a long talk until sunrise, springtime "when the ice melts on the ground again." None of them are urgent; the song's whole feel is the opposite of urgency, which is the point it's making about the kind of relationship it's describing.

"You know me better than anyone" is the line the whole song hinges on — not chemistry or excitement, but being fully known and staying anyway. Renzema doesn't spell out who that's about, and the song works precisely because it doesn't have to; it's the same quiet loyalty Proverbs 18:24 describes in "a friend who sticks closer than a brother."

The bridge adds one more layer — "you just get better, better with time" — turning steadiness itself into the thing being celebrated, closer to Lamentations 3:22-23's picture of a faithfulness that's renewed morning after morning rather than a single dramatic moment.
