Amaryllis

Christy Nockels opens with a season rather than a scene: "talk about a winter the world had never known, talk about a silence that hardened up the soil, no more life left in Eden." The whole Old Testament waiting period gets compressed into weather imagery before the song ever mentions Bethlehem.

The title image does the real work: an amaryllis is a flower that blooms indoors in the dead of winter, out of season by nature. "Like an Amaryllis, blooming at Christmas, when everything was cold and dark, Your love broke through and You shined." Christ's birth gets pictured as something that shouldn't have been possible on the calendar it actually happened on.

The second verse turns the metaphor personal — "here I am waiting in a winter of my own... you're asking me to break through the hardness of this freeze" — applying the same out-of-season hope to present difficulty rather than leaving it as a Christmas-only image. Isaiah's promise of a great light for people walking in darkness, and Paul's claim that in Christ, everything is made new, both sit behind a song that finds its central metaphor in a houseplant rather than a more obvious symbol.
