Told from Mary's side of the manger, the song begins with touch and breath: a "tiny heart, held close to mine," a "tiny mouth, breathing on me," fresh "from the breath of God." Christy Nockels remembers the angels' announcement as something Mary will "always remember," and the chorus hands their song back as a lullaby: "Glory to the newborn King... It's the angels' lullaby."
Midway a shadow enters. "Sleep my child, a darker day comes" keeps the cross in view without leaving the stable, while the night itself becomes "sweet memory, kept in our heart of hearts." The bridge widens from "the farthest star" to "a mother's heart" and on to "all who will believe," who are invited to "welcome You." A wordless "la la" passage and a repeated "Praise You" settle into quiet adoration before the last chorus.
