Song Meaning

"Dead man walking until You breathed" is where the song begins, and the breath is what changes everything: "My heart came alive, came alive for the first time." A prisoner is now free, and the chorus credits the one who did it, "You bought my freedom, thank You, Jesus," before settling into the refrain "Oh the wonder of Your love for me."

Verse two moves from testimony to gratitude. The singer asks "how can it be?" to belong to God forever, then answers with repeated hallelujahs to "the One who is worthy," a call-and-response line that a room full of people can pick up quickly.

The bridge turns outward and gets louder. It lists what the redeemed carry, "the joy that's found in a heavenly hope" and "peace like a river down in my soul," then addresses anyone who has "tasted the goodness of His grace" and invites them to "shake these walls with a shout of praise." The new life of the opening lines connects to Ephesians 2:4-5, the freedom to John 8:36, and the invitation to taste and see to Psalm 34:8. Recorded for the Prayer Room series, it keeps the wording simple enough for congregational singing.

Verse 1:
Dead man walking until You breathed
My heart came alive, came alive for the first time
Once a prisoner, but now I'm free
And I feel so alive, so alive for the first time
Oh, I feel so alive, so alive for the first time

Chorus:
Oh the wonder, awesome wonder
Praise the One who took these chains from me
You bought my freedom, thank You, Jesus
Oh the wonder of Your love for me, oh-oh, oh-oh

Verse 2:
Yours forever, how can it be?
Well, hallelujah to the One, to the One who has called me
And with thanksgiving, I will sing
Hallelujah to the One, to the One who is worthy (Come on, hallelujah)
And hallelujah to the One, to the One who is worthy

Chorus:
Oh the wonder, awesome wonder
Praise the One who took these chains from me
You bought my freedom, thank You, Jesus
Oh the wonder of Your love for me, oh-oh, oh-oh

Bridge:
We sing
That I've got the joy that's found in a heavenly hope
Peace like a river down in my soul
I'm held by the power of the Holy Ghost
Oh what a wonder (Oh what a wonder)
If you've tasted the goodness of His grace
Been redeemed by the power of Jesus' name
Then shake these walls with a shout of praise
Oh what a wonder (Oh what a wonder)
Well, I've got the joy that's found in a heavenly hope
Peace like a river down in my soul
I'm held by the power of the Holy Ghost
Oh what a wonder (Oh what a wonder)
If you've tasted the goodness of His grace
Been redeemed by the power of Jesus' name
Then shake these walls with a shout of praise
Shake these walls with a shout of praise
Shake these walls with a shout of praise
