Personal Friend

Donald Lawrence stacks up a list of titles for Jesus — king, seed of Abraham, 'mighty rose of Sharon,' 'meek and humble lamb' — pulling directly from Song of Solomon 2:1's self-description, before landing on the one title that makes the whole song personal rather than merely doctrinal: 'he's a personal friend of mine.'

That word choice matters — not savior, not lord, though the song has already established both — but friend, echoing John 15:15's account of Jesus telling his disciples 'I have called you friends,' not servants. 'He made a way out of no way, soothed my doubts and fears, wiped away my tears' keeps the friendship concrete rather than abstract, naming specific things a friend does rather than staying at the level of theological title alone. The repeated question the song answers — 'you asked me how I know Him' — treats the whole list of titles as a testimony given in response to a genuine question, not a recitation performed on its own.
