You Are An Heir

Donald Lawrence's “You Are An Heir” is a gospel song that tells listeners who they are. The opening lines ask whether they know they are called for greatness, chosen to reign and to lead with holy boldness. The voice then admits to seeing their failures and needing answers.

The turn comes with the line that those with great failures are blessed to be great winners. The listener is told to see themselves in the future, and the song repeats that phrase until it becomes a refrain. The main chorus says that you are an heir, you are royalty, destined to possess the land, and invites them to embrace their legacy. A closing section addresses my sons and my daughters, asking if they know they are royalty. The song is built on repeated phrases and layered choir voices, which gives it a sense of a pastor speaking over a crowd. It fits a service for young people, a graduation or any gathering where members need encouragement after a failure. The core message is that identity comes from being a child of God and not from past mistakes or current circumstances. The talk of land and royalty draws on ancient promises to Israel that the apostles apply to all who belong to Christ.

Being heirs with Christ is Romans 8:17. A son and an heir through God is Galatians 4:7, and a royal priesthood is 1 Peter 2:9.
