Watch Over Me

Every Nation Music's “Watch Over Me” is a prayer of trust built on the language of Psalm 91. It begins with a statement of faith: “In Your presence, armies fall, and in my weakness, You are strong. In darkness, You go before.” The singer says he will not fear when God calls him out, and the refrain asks, “Watch over me,” after the line that the Lord commands the angels to stand.

The verses describe God by what he does. “You are faithful, never failing, You are steadfast, unchanging. When I call, You will answer.” The second verse says that in God's shadow the singer is brave, and that he stands secure in the face of enemies because God delivers him. The bridge changes to confidence: “I know that You will save me when I call upon Your name. No harm will overtake me because You overcame.” It ends in shelter imagery, with God as refuge, rest beneath his wings and safety in the shelter of the King. The tune is steady and works well in congregational singing, especially when people face fear or uncertainty and want words that name God as protector. The chorus is short enough to sing from memory, so it can follow people out of the service.

Angels given charge over the faithful is Psalm 91:11. Taking refuge under his wings is Psalm 91:4, and calling the Lord a refuge and fortress is Psalm 91:2.
