Amazing Grace

Forrest Frank keeps John Newton's original text almost entirely intact — 'I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see' — and builds his own verses around it rather than replacing it, which is the more interesting choice here. His added lines ('down so bad,' 'feeling locked up all night and day') translate Newton's eighteenth-century 'wretch' into something closer to depression and isolation, a modern equivalent rather than a softened one.

'Was lost but now I'm found' pulls directly from Luke 15:24's prodigal son, celebrated not for correcting himself but simply for being found again — the same logic behind Frank's own bridge, 'you still say I'm yours' despite falling short 'every day.' The production choice to let the classic hymn text and the new verses sit back to back, unblended, makes the four-century gap between them oddly small: both are describing the identical rescue, just in different vocabulary.
