It Is Well

Forrest Frank keeps Horatio Spafford's 1873 refrain word for word — 'it is well, it is well, with my soul' — while writing entirely new verses that update the hymn's original grief (Spafford wrote it after losing his four daughters at sea) into a different, more contemporary register: parents 'crying on the edge,' fathers hiding depression behind toughness. The refrain doesn't change to match the new content; it stays exactly as fixed as it was in 1873, which is the whole point — the claim survives being applied to new pain.

'In the midst of the pain, in the storm, in the rain, I know God is the same' echoes Malachi 3:6's 'I, Yahweh, don't change,' making God's constancy the actual reason the refrain can be repeated across such different situations without sounding hollow. 'Numbered all my flaws but You still don't count the estimate' plays two different senses of counting against each other — God keeps track of everything, yet doesn't hold it against him — landing close to Philippians 4:7's 'peace... which surpasses all understanding' as the only category wide enough to hold both truths at once.
