Forrest Frank keeps Robert Lowry's 1876 refrain as the song's unbreakable anchor — 'what can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus' — repeated so often it functions less like a chorus and more like the answer the whole song keeps testing every other possible response against. 1 John 1:7's claim that 'the blood of Jesus Christ... cleanses us from all sin' is the hymn's entire theology compressed into Lowry's original four words.

The new verses stay specific about what that cleansing is being tested against: 'I can't believe I spent so many years trynna fight this,' 'who can save me from the shadows of my shame?' Hebrews 9:22's principle that 'apart from shedding of blood there is no remission' sits behind the hymn's refusal to accept any substitute answer — not self-improvement, not time, only the one thing named in the title. 'B-I-B-L-E, when I cite this, that's the only weapon I need when I'm in a crisis' updates the old hymn's confidence into a specifically modern, specifically personal claim without changing what it's actually confident about.
