I Wanna Go To Heaven

Song Meaning

Fountainview Academy's arrangement leans entirely on anticipation rather than present experience — every verse begins with 'I wanna,' naming a longing that hasn't been satisfied yet rather than describing a current spiritual high. 'You have washed your robes in my blood' answers that longing directly, borrowing Revelation 7:14's picture of the redeemed who came through tribulation and washed their robes white in the Lamb's blood, addressed here as something Jesus himself will say to the singer face to face.

The closing images are unusually concrete for a hymn about heaven — casting a crown at Jesus's feet, sitting at his table, eating the fruit of that land — small physical gestures rather than abstract glory. 'And when I get to Heaven I'll cast my crown at Jesus feet' picks up Revelation 4:10's image of the twenty-four elders throwing their own crowns down before the throne, turning a scene from Revelation's throne room into something the singer expects to personally take part in, not just witness from a distance.

I wanna go to Heaven, and pick a never fading flower,
From the mountain overlooking the temple of my God.
I wanna go to Heaven, where all is light and glory,
How I long to be with Jesus! How I long to be with God!

Chorus:
Some times I think that I could stay here no longer.
I feel very lonely here, for I've seen a better land!
Oh! That I had wings like a dove,
Then would I fly away, and be at rest.

I wanna go to Heaven, I wanna hear the voice of Jesus,
"You have washed your robes in my blood, stood stiffly for my truth."
And when I get to Heaven I'll cast my crown at Jesus feet!
I wanna praise His name forever!
He has done so much for me!

I wanna go to Heaven, I wanna hear the voice of Jesus,
"I will gird myself and serve you, for you suffered much for me."
And when I get to Heaven I wanna sit at Jesus' table!
Oh! To eat the fruit of that land,
To go back to earth no more!
