Blessed Assurance

Fanny Crosby wrote "Blessed Assurance" in the few minutes it took Phoebe Knapp to play her a new melody and ask what it said; Crosby, blind since infancy, answered with the hymn's opening line before the tune had even finished. Elevation Worship's version keeps that original text almost entirely intact — "heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His Spirit, washed in His blood" — four short phrases that summarize the whole doctrine of adoption and redemption in a single verse. The second verse shifts from theology to posture: "perfect submission, all is at rest," describing not passivity but the specific peace of no longer having to secure one's own standing before God. What Elevation adds is a bridge built on resurrection rather than assurance alone — "death could not hold You, You are victorious, praise to the risen King" — connecting Crosby's nineteenth-century confidence in personal salvation to the historical event that makes it possible in the first place. The repeated "this is my story, this is my song" line is Crosby's own signature: not abstract praise, but this specific believer's account of what happened to her, sung by every congregation since as if it were their own.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
O what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blessed
Watching and waiting, looking above
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love

This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long
This is my story, this is my song
Praising my Savior all the day long

Oh what a Savior, wonderful Jesus
Oh what a Savior, wonderful Jesus
Oh what a Savior, wonderful Jesus
Oh what a Savior, wonderful Jesus
[x2]

Death could not hold You, You are victorious
Praise to the risen King
Death could not hold You, You are victorious
Praise to the risen King

Oh what a Savior, wonderful Jesus
Oh what a Savior, wonderful Jesus
Oh what a Savior, wonderful Jesus
Oh what a Savior

Wonderful Savior
