Via Dolorosa
Song Meaning
Fred Hammond's bilingual "Via Dolorosa" narrates one specific walk through first-century Jerusalem — "the soldiers tried to clear the narrow street, but the crowd pressed in to see the Man condemned to die on Calvary." The song stays close to the ground the whole way, refusing to let the crucifixion stay abstract or distant.
"He was bleeding from a beating, there were stripes upon His back, and He wore a crown of thorns upon His head" names the physical details plainly rather than softening them, and "like a lamb came the Messiah" echoes Isaiah's prophecy of a suffering servant led like a lamb to the slaughter, silent, not resisting what was coming.
"But He chose to walk that road out of love for you and me" is the turn the whole song has been building toward — not a tragedy that happened to Him, but a road He walked on purpose. The Spanish verses ("Por la Via Dolorosa, que es la via del dolor") repeat the same claim in a different language, the way from Jerusalem's street to Calvary rendered as the way of suffering, chosen out of love rather than forced by circumstance.
Down the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem that day
The soldiers tried to clear the narrow street
But the crowd pressed in to see
The Man condemned to die on Calvary
He was bleeding from a beating, there were stripes upon His back
And He wore a crown of thorns upon His head
And He bore with every step
The scorn of those who cried out for His death... death
Down the Via Dolorosa called the way of suffering
Like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King
But He chose to walk that road out of
Love for you and me
Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary
The blood that would cleanse the souls of all men
Made its way to the heart of Jerusalem
Down the Via Dolorosa called the way of suffering
Like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King
But He chose to walk that road out of love for you and me
Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary
Por la Via Dolorosa, que es la via del dolor
Just like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King
Y fue El quien quiso ir por su amor por ti y por mi
Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary (all the way to Calvary)
