Tapestry
Song Meaning
Creation and redemption share one loom in Hillsong United's "Tapestry." The first verse begins with the Maker of earth and sky, whose word "formed life and light," and the chorus describes lives as "a tapestry of grace" that God's hand "has weaved together," with no thread that will ever fray. The craft language continues with "masterpiece" and "work of art," close to Ephesians 2:10, where believers are called God's workmanship.
The second verse carries the picture to Calvary. God is the "Author of grace divine," and the cross is named "the centerpiece" of the gift, the place where "You set us free." Rather than leaving grace abstract, the lyric fastens the design to one event, so the metaphor never drifts into decoration.
A short closing section looks up: "Lift our eyes towards the Son," then "Raised to life You've overcome." Parenthetical lines add "Every knee will bow at the name of Jesus," pointing to Philippians 2:10, while the Author wording recalls Hebrews 12:2. The song settles on confidence instead of puzzlement, since the work holds together because Christ does.
[Verse 1]
Maker of earth and sky
And everything before our eyes
Your word formed life and light
Within the crucible of time
The genesis of all mankind
[Chorus]
Our lives a tapestry of grace
Your hand has weaved together
In You no thread will ever fray
This hope is ours forever
Your work of art a mystery
Beyond all earthly measure
Your love for us a masterpiece
Jesus our hope always
[Verse 2]
Author of grace divine
Love orchestrated in our lives
The cross of Calvary
The gift of God, the centerpiece
Upon that cross You set us free
[Chorus]
Our lives a tapestry of grace
Your hand has weaved together
In You no thread will ever fray
This hope is ours forever
Your work of art a mystery
Beyond all earthly measure
Your love for us a masterpiece
Jesus our hope always
[Bridge]
Lift our eyes towards the Son
Glorious You stand alone
Raised to life You've overcome
Holy is the Lord our God
(Your love is unrivaled)
Lift our eyes towards the Son
(Your glory spans eternity)
Glorious You stand alone
(Your word is final)
Raised to life You've overcome
(The cross of Christ our victory
Every knee will bow at the name of Jesus)
Holy is the Lord our God
(For there is no name like the name of Jesus)
