Forsaken

Song Meaning

Jamie Grace opens in genuine distress rather than resolved faith — crying herself to sleep over starving children, people asking why they should believe in a God who "won't even show them His face." She doesn't defend God from the accusation; she sits inside it, admitting she doesn't have a better answer than the people asking.

Her chorus borrows words she didn't invent: "my God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" repeated as its own kind of prayer rather than an answer. Grace keeps naming what's broken — wars, poverty, cycles of pain passed from father to son — without rushing to explain why a loving God allows it.

Jesus cries those same words from the cross in Matthew 27:46, quoting David's own lament in Psalm 22:1, proof that this question has always belonged inside faith rather than outside it. By the final chorus, Grace's lyric shifts from accusation to promise — "you will never leave me" — landing on Hebrews 13:5's assurance without ever pretending the earlier questions weren't real.

[Verse 1]

I think I'm gonna cry myself to sleep tonight

'Cause something in this world just ain't right

The children are starving, the people are calling

For something their eyes cannot see

I try to encourage them but they look at me

And say how can I believe?

In someone that loves them but won't even show them

His face when they've asked Him to

Where is this Savior and who is the maker

Who came and delivered you…

[Chorus]

My God, my God

Why have You forsaken me?

Why have You forsaken me?

My God, my God

Why have You forsaken me?

Why have You forsaken me?

[Verse 2]

I just wanna fix everything that's wrong

But what more am I doing but writing a song?

When babies have babies, they're babies

They're craving for something they think is true love

Maybe 'cause daddy he wasn't a daddy

'Cause his daddy left him alone

And people who hold so much power keep holding to power

They sit on their thrones

A cycle of strategy crafting a battle

That You already won

[Chorus]

My God, my God

Why have You forsaken me?

Why have You forsaken me?

My God, my God

Why have You forsaken me?

Why have You forsaken me?

[Verse 3]

Wars aren't ending

Poverty's building

Sickness rising

Secrets hiding

Why won't You

Do what You can do?

People are livid

They don't wanna live in

This world that You've called us

To be in and not of

I don't understand it

Is that what You call love

I know You sent Your son

To die for us all but

Feels like we're hitting

Wall after wall, after wall

So take all this courage

I'm using to cry out

And turn it around for

Your glory to shine out

Your name in the earth

No matter how long it will take

And take all this passion

I'm using to bash and

Take all these fads that

Are destined to crash

I know it seems dark

But I still believe in Hope

I know it seems dark

But I still believe in Hope, mm-mm

[Verse 4]

My God, my God

Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

My God, my God

You will never leave me

You will never, You will never

My God, my God

You will never leave me

You will never leave me

Never, my love

Even when I can't see

You're working on something…

You're working on me
