Song Meaning
Jason Crabb's “Free at Last” is a testimony of someone who spent years building his own prison and then found out the door was never locked from the outside. The verses describe being a prisoner to himself, a maker of his own chains, shackled by the things he thought he wanted and fooled into believing they made him free.
The chorus is the release. His shame is gone, “Amazing Grace” is his new song, and the burdens of his heart are lifted like a stone rolled away. He pictures being pulled up out of a grave when he was crying and someone saved him. A later verse says he cannot believe it took so long or that he ran so far while the love of God was chasing him all that time. He promises to shout it from the roof, since true freedom is found only in the blood of Jesus. The last section compares him to a prisoner who has been pardoned, made new, with broken shackles and nothing God cannot do. The warm southern gospel sound and the strong group vocals give the song the feeling of a congregation answering back, which makes it a good fit for a recovery meeting, a baptism service or any Sunday that celebrates a changed life.
