Better Way To Live

A question to someone guarded sets the scene: "How long have you been dreaming / Of a life bigger than the one you lead." Jason Gray says hurt has made the listener cautious while hope keeps "tugging at your sleeve," and the chorus names the discovery: "It's not the love you have but the love you have to give."

The second verse moves to first-person confession. After years of "looking in the mirror" and praying for wings, the singer looks out the window at the world instead and, "with a broken heart," comes alive. The change of direction is the point; fulfillment arrives by looking outward rather than inward.

The bridge supplies the practical list: stepping aside from the center of our lives, pursuing peace and honesty, learning "to love mercy more than being right," and "seeing where it leads." Micah 6:8 puts mercy and humble walking in the same breath, Philippians 2 asks that the interests of others come first, and Acts 20:35 records Jesus saying it is more blessed to give than to receive, which is the chorus in other words.
