Joy To The World
Song Meaning
JJ Heller is the sixth artist on this site's backlog to record Isaac Watts's 1719 carol within this same review cycle, and her version keeps the text entirely unaltered — no added chorus, no reworked bridge, just the original three verses carried by a gentler, more intimate arrangement than most of the other versions reviewed this cycle. 'Let every heart prepare Him room' stays exactly as Watts wrote it, an instruction aimed at the individual listener as much as at 'earth' broadly.
Romans 5:11's language of rejoicing 'in God through our Lord Jesus Christ' sits behind the carol's whole tone — joy here isn't circumstantial excitement, it's a response to a specific reconciliation already accomplished. Psalm 98:4's instruction to 'make a joyful noise to Yahweh, all the earth' is the psalm Watts was paraphrasing when he wrote the carol, and hearing the same nearly three-hundred-year-old text arranged so differently across six separate recordings on one backlog says something about how durable a genuinely simple, well-made text turns out to be.
Joy to the world
The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing
Joy to the world
The Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders of His love
