Let Down Your Guard

JJ Heller sings to someone hiding rather than someone failing — "I can see it in your face, you're somewhere below the surface," she notices, calling the person behind the defenses "a masterpiece behind a curtain." The observation comes first; the invitation follows only after she's actually seen what's there.

Her offer isn't conditional on the person getting braver first: "let down your guard, I will never hurt you... no matter what you've been through, I will always love you." She even offers to carry some of the risk herself — "I can teach you to be brave when you climb upon my shoulders" — rather than demanding courage as a prerequisite for love.

That echoes 1 John 4:18, which says perfect love drives out fear rather than waiting for fear to leave first, and Zephaniah 3:17 pictures God rejoicing over his people and quieting them with his love. Heller's closing line — "you don't have to hide, you can be alive" — treats safety as something offered up front, not earned afterward.
