Song Meaning
JJ Heller borrows Jesus' own image of the lilies that neither toil nor spin in "More" — "toiling and spinning round and round, vanity fair has taken this town down." The phrase comes directly from the Sermon on the Mount's teaching against anxious striving.
"We bought what we want to get us back to the feeling where we are happy before the feeling leaves, and what we bought doesn't add up to what we really need" names the specific cycle of consumption and disappointment rather than describing materialism in the abstract. "Does American dreaming drive you still?" keeps the target current and specific.
"When will you have enough, just a little bit more, just a little bit more, when will you be satisfied?" repeats as the song's entire, unanswered question — short and unresolved on purpose, leaving the listener to sit with how familiar the pattern actually sounds.
Hey child
Where' s your smile
Did the man on the television get you down
Hey man
You should feel so fulfilled
Does American dreaming drive you still
When will you have enough
Just a little bit more
Just a little bit more
When will you be satisfied
Just a little bit more
Just a little bit more
Toiling
And spinning round and round
Vanity fair has taken this town down
Just one more thing you know you need
You need
