Only Have One

JJ Heller admits the limits of a parent's control in "Only Have One" — "nobody knows which way you'll go, I can't control you, I pray tomorrow is brighter than today" — naming hope as the only tool left once influence runs out.

"I should not try to live two lives, I only have one, you have yours and I have mine, we only have one life" states the chorus's whole argument plainly, refusing to let one person's choices be absorbed into another's anxiety, even between parent and child.

"I watch you make the same mistake, you learn the hard way" admits repeated failure without stepping in to prevent it, and "I pray tomorrow you will hear what love has to say" keeps the hoped-for change tied to love rather than correction. "I try to hold you with an open hand, you run away, you're faster than I am" pictures restraint as active effort rather than passivity, and the closing image, borrowed nearly whole from an old proverb — "I can lead you to the water, but I cannot make you drink" — lets the song end admitting the exact boundary of what love can actually accomplish.
