Silent Ones

JJ Heller follows someone easy to overlook in "Silent Ones" — "almost time to pack up and move on again, no one notices anyway, tryin' hard not to show all the pain tucked away" — naming invisibility itself as part of the suffering, not just a side effect of it.

"All she needs is a voice to speak up" states the song's actual request plainly, and the chorus turns that observation into a direct question — "for the silent ones, are you listening, are you willing to share in their pain, will you give without getting a thing in return" — asking the listener to become the voice just described as missing.

The second verse shifts to a different picture of the same problem — "he has a habit of sitting all alone, wears a menacing look on his face, hoping that anger will cover the hurt little boy who is hiding inside where it's safe" — showing that silence and anger can be the same defense wearing different faces. "'Cause you know that your Father has done the same" repeats as the reason behind the request each time, and the closing line extends the thought further — "more for you than you could ever repay" — grounding the call to notice others in a debt already owed rather than a favor being asked.
