True Things

JJ Heller spends her verses listing everything she isn't — not the clothes, not the car, not the money made or lacked, not even "the songs that I write." It's an unusually thorough inventory, stripping away every external marker before she'll say anything about who she actually is.

What's left after the list is deliberately vague at first — "I am who I am" — before the chorus admits the real difficulty isn't defining herself, it's believing what's already true: "there are true things inside of me I have been afraid to see." Heller doesn't claim instant clarity; she asks for the words to be repeated.

Her borrowed line, "I believe, help my unbelief," comes straight from the father in Mark 9:24, caught between faith and doubt in the same breath, and Paul calls every believer God's "workmanship" in Ephesians 2:10, made for a purpose no résumé could capture. Heller's closing image — waking up "in your love" — treats identity as something received while half-asleep, not achieved while performing.
