JJ Heller tells this one almost entirely through small, specific memories — a teenage boy's offhand comment about eye color, a mother's answered prayer revealed years later, a friend overhearing someone singing alone and asking them to keep going. None of them are dramatic on their own; the song's case is that words don't need to be dramatic to matter.

The mother's line does the most work: "I always loved your father's eyes, and I asked that God would hand them down, so I see the beauty of an answered prayer in your eyes now." It's a quiet claim that an ordinary detail — a child's eye color — can carry an actual answer to prayer, which gives Proverbs 16:24's "pleasant words... sweetness to the soul" a concrete example instead of a general principle.

The refrain keeps both sides of the coin in view — words "can honor you like a glittering crown, or like an anchor they can drag you down" — matching Proverbs 18:21's warning that the tongue holds "the power of life and death," not just one or the other.
