Good For Me

Jon Foreman's "Good For Me" is built on a restless question rather than an answer. The singer keeps circling the same line — wondering whether what he has poured into his soul is actually nourishing him or quietly doing damage — and the repetition makes the doubt feel less like a thought and more like a habit he can't shake. The imagery is sharp and a little unsettling: fluorescent lights that pass for the sun until you notice it's an illusion, snakes for hands, a lamb led off to slaughter, people drinking sand they mistook for water. There's a physical helplessness in it too, the sense of being a bone out of socket, of fear swallowing him whole. The song's most interesting turn comes when the question shifts from a thing to a person: are you the cure or the disease, forgiveness or the chain, liberty or chains? That ambiguity is the whole point. Even the moment of being upside down, mistaking floor for ceiling, ends with the admission that from that backwards view she looked just like the real thing.
