Billy James Foote wrote this chorus around a single exchange: "I'm forgiven because You were forsaken, and I'm accepted, You were condemned." Each line trades one person's status for the other's — forgiveness for forsakenness, acceptance for condemnation — making substitution the song's entire theological content rather than a footnote to general praise. "I'm alive and well, Your Spirit is within me, because You died and rose again" extends the trade past legal standing into present experience, tying the singer's ongoing life directly to a specific historical event rather than a feeling. The title question — "amazing love, how can it be, that You my king would die for me" — is asked and then answered by the same phrase twice: "I know it's true," not as proof, but as settled conviction after the trade has already been named. "That it's my joy to honor You" reframes the expected response; the natural reaction to what's just been described isn't obligation but joy, and the repeated declaration "You are my king" at the song's end functions as that joy's most basic possible expression — not a fuller argument, just the plainest one.
