Song Meaning

Jonathan Ogden's “Sufficient for Me” is a song about praising God when prayers are not answered the way the singer hopes. The first verse commits to the cost of following: “I will carry my cross for all of my days, I have counted the cost, Lord, lead me in Your ways.” It then admits the pull to quit, “Sometimes I want to say, 'Lord, take this cup from me.'” The pre-chorus answers, “Still I will praise You even if You don't, 'cause where I'm weak, my Father, You are strong.”

The chorus gives pain a purpose, “Sometimes it's the pain that makes me lean on my Beloved,” and “sometimes it's my brokenness that keeps me kneeling at the foot of the cross.” The second verse looks ahead to a day “when I'll leave this all behind” and God will “wipe every tear from my eye,” and the singer will say, “It was worth it all this time, just to be with You.” The bridge repeats the central truth, “Your grace is sufficient for me, and Your power is made perfect in my weakness.”

The bridge quotes 2 Corinthians 12:9. The cup is from Luke 22:42, and tears wiped away appear in Revelation 21:4.

I will carry my cross
For all of my days
I have counted the cost
Lord, lead me in Your ways
I depend on Your love
But sometimes I want to say
"Lord, take this cup from me"

[Pre-Chorus]
Still I will praise You even if You don't
'Cause where I'm weak, my Father, You are strong

[Chorus]
Sometimes it's the pain that makes me lean on my Beloved
Sometimes in the suffering we meet
But sometimes it's my brokenness that keeps me
Kneeling at the foot of the cross
Lord, You're still worthy

[Verse 2]
There is coming a day
When I'll leave this all behind
And we'll see face to face
As You wipe every tear from my eye
And at last I will say
"It was worth it all this time
Just to be with You, my God"

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Still I will praise You even in the storm
'Cause where I'm weak, my Father, You are strong
Still I will praise You even in the storm
'Cause where I'm weak, my Father, You are strong

[Chorus]
Sometimes it's the pain that makes me lean on my Beloved
Sometimes in the suffering we meet
And sometimes it's my brokenness that keeps me
Kneeling at the foot of the cross
Lord, You're still worthy

[Bridge]
Oh, Your grace is sufficient for me
And Your power is made perfect in my weakness
Lord, Your grace is sufficient for me
And Your power is made perfect in my weakness
Oh, Your grace is sufficient for me
And Your power is made perfect in my weakness
Oh, Your grace is sufficient for me
And Your power is made perfect in my weakness
Oh Lord
