Song Meaning
Josh Wilson, joined by Mandisa, sings this spiritual's familiar structure without variation, opening with its repeated command: "go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere, go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born."
"While shepherds kept their watching o'er silent flocks by night, behold, throughout the heavens there shone a holy light" keeps the shepherd's-eye framing intact through the second verse.
"The shepherds feared and trembled, when lo, above the earth, rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior's birth" lets the fear sit alongside the announcement rather than resolving it immediately, the same tension Luke's Gospel keeps in its own account.
"Down in a lonely manger the humble Christ was born, and God sent our salvation that blessed Christmas morn" closes the carol's final verse on the same plain claim John's Gospel makes about God's love for the world — good news meant to be carried outward, which is what the title command has been insisting on since the first line.

Go, tell it on the mountain,
over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
that Jesus Christ is born.
While shepards kept their watching
o'er silent flocks by night,
behond, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.
Go, tell it on the mountain,
over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
that Jesus Christ is born.
The shepards feared and trembled
when lo, above the earth
rang out the angel chorus
that hailed our Saviour's birth!
Go, tell it on the mountain,
over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
that Jesus Christ is born.
Down in a lonely manger
the humble Christ was born,
and God sent our salvation
that blessed Christmas morn.
Go, tell it on the mountain,
over the hills and everywhere.
Go, tell it on the mountain
that Jesus Christ is born,
that Jesus Christ is born.
