The One For Me

Judikay's “The One For Me” is a worship song about devotion to Jesus above everything else. It opens with a question: what is life that is not lived for you, and what is life that is not lived in you. From there it addresses Jesus by the names Bridegroom and Lover, and says the heart is all his.

The singer calls him the one she hungers for and describes herself as a steward who gives back everything he gives to her. What she wants is his heart, and she wants to know him. The middle section strings together words about closeness, intimacy with him, koinonia with him, and a refusal to settle for anything else: no one else will do. The ending is a statement of open love, saying she is unashamedly and unapologetically in love with him, that her soul longs for him and her heart beats for him, and that she still chooses him. The repeated lines and the slow, building Nigerian gospel sound give a congregation time to linger in a single thought, which suits a prayer or tarrying service, a late-night session, or private time on a day when other things are competing for attention. The emphasis on knowing Jesus and not only receiving from him is the main point.

Belonging to the beloved is Song of Solomon 2:16. Desiring nothing on earth besides him is Psalm 73:25, and counting all things loss for knowing Christ is Philippians 3:8.
